9/17/2019 Astro Byond Software Update Error
My personal experience.used to have two dishes connected to two decoders. One upstairs and another downstairs. When I swap to B.yond for the one downstairs, I have to use a new dish and cabling because if I use the old cabling, the signal is not good enough.
The installer said it may be due to oxidization of the said cable since it's already more than 10 years. Check with you installer. If the signal strength is good enough then there is no need to worry This post has been edited by lapaq: Sep 14 2010, 06:34 PM. I have called CS, and they are under the impression that this is a technical error done by the update. But I believe that Astro is purposely doing this and shoving the zoom and pillarbox format down our throat, hoping that we can accept. They were greatly mistaken.
The CS mentioned that they have received a lot of calls about that today. He even asked me straightaway upon answering,'Is this about the picture issue sir?' Nevertheless, he took my account number and phone number and filed a report. He also mentioned that another update may be done in the next 24 hours to fix this (somehow I doubt this), so try to leave the Byond box in standby. I send a feedback thru their website please bring back the stretch viewing option, i cannot watch my SD channels in zoom with the subtitle being cut off and people's head cut on the top. If i wanted to watch SD channel in pillar box i might as well stick with my CRT TV. Astro never test the setting before being made available to public? What kind of service is this? Only in MALAYSIA.
hope i got a call, we need rebate for this mess!!!!!! Muahahahah This post has been edited by escaflo: Mar 11 2010, 10:59 PM. Below is the response i got after complaining to them via the link on the 1st page.

So rather that you guys hentam or kasi cukup cukup or complain or marah or kasi ajar, it s better to be polite coz firstly its good manners and secondly you have not paid a single cent yet to them.lets be fair. Come april, first bill and if there are still issue to be resolved.its your money and your voice.open table mates. Until then, lets be fair. Correct me if i am wrong.

Until then, lets be fair. I gave the customercare another call and gave her a good 20 minutes of a lecture. She finally gave up and asked me for my number because i kept pestering her for some one who cane let me know how or when this will be rectified. A guy called me 30 minutes later apologizing for the problem and said that he couldn't give any date due to the weekends and the managment won't have any meetings till monday. But he said the strech will be restored and due to the number of complaints he said it will be sooner rather then later. He also promised to call me back on monday with an update because i said if they are gonna take 2 3 months to rectify this i want them to come and take this decoder, shove it up their asses and give me my old decoder back. All i can say is keep calling astro (i plan to call again tomorrow) seems like they are under pressure.
If not, then just terminate byond. Pay the stupid penalty, and get on with ur lives (that my plan anyway). Astro has been pulling a lot of crap these past years.Boxoffice suddenly started sucking. Then Kirana was removed now aruna. Now this stupid stunt.

In normal terms for u with dont bother to read the thread and knowing whats it all about attitude and Normal IQ.YES WE PAID THEM FOR SD MONTHLY!Theres no such thing as not paying. Or U dont actually have ASTRO beyond and just wanna participate in the discussion to make u look clever than u really are. This post has been edited by froggyx: Mar 14 2010, 08:42 AM.
Since you are not billed for byond yet so dont be sad if no stretch ok?Maybe u miss understand here. Actually we are here discuss about SD/Non-HD channel on byond and that what we paid every month. If u think we are not billed for byond than u are totally wrong.
Yes i know we not paying anything yet for HD channel, that why we not comment anything about HD here. We disscuss about stretch mode that we want back because it has be taking off by astro.
Stretch mode is only affect on SD/Non-HD channel. Hope u clearly understand what happen here.
Hamas, i think you are not clear why most of us feel upset. 1) astro took away the strecth option away 2) for Plasma owner, pillar box will damage the TV in the long run.
You are the minority here, who like the pillar box. Good for you, but we just want back the stretch option, thats all. 3) dont tell me, just because we only going to be charged RM20, next month, we are not entitled to voice out our anger. We have a contract, before we sign on the dotted line, we were promised so much, but little so far to suggest Astro can deliver. What is that? Astro must be joking if they consider that as HD. While I agree that the purist way of watching 4:3 programmes is in pillar-box mode, I reserve the right to watch it the way I want to.
As well there are purists in audio who think that they should not listen in multichannel because they only have two ears, yet I like running my 2-channel audio through Dolby Prologic II or DTS:Neo. Should AVR manufacturers remove the DPLII and DTS:Neo option because these are not the 'correct' way of listening to stereo material? I don't see how Astro, having cut the original 16:9 video to transmit in 4:3 have any right to tell us how to watch it. Why don't they transmit SD in 16:9 anyways? If you have a 4:3 screen you'll be letterboxed, and that would be ok because everyone is used to letterboxing.
This post has been edited by SiriuslyCold: Mar 14 2010, 10:01 PM. Yeah maybe ur right. But u should know not all people are same. Each one of us has own perspective.
Some like black and some like white. Same here as paying astro subcriber, i think we have right to choose our convience way to watch as long as we happy with that. So I think look weird it not a issue to here. Like me, sometime I switch to pillar box when I not happy with the picture and mostly I convience watch in stretch mode. If astro want us strictly to watch the correct way I think they should remove zoom option at the first place.
No more option to select aspect ratio right? While I agree that the purist way of watching 4:3 programmes is in pillar-box mode, I reserve the right to watch it the way I want to. Frankly, I don't really bother to read what other people are saying. Coz each of us pays good money to Assterung.
So we are entitled to our own preference as to how we wanna watch our TV. What I know now is that I want the stretch function back, added to the present zoom and pillarbox. So the purists can smile, and we can be happy watching fat Rooney trash Milan and Fulham. You guys can argue till the pigs fly, but at the end of the day, we are all paying Assterung, and they should cater to ALL of us.

In fact, i can choose either through composite, component and hdmi and i am getting full picture i.e stretch.well on my part i have separate setting for each input so i dont mind changing them each time. By all means, as of now we are enjoying free HD content, 5.1 digital audio, totally free new decoder, dish + wiring.
Lot of people wrote and praise on the espn HD experience. Rather than labelling me as an astro backer etc, why not you compare on what you re getting and what you're losing. The main reason we are taking b.yond is HD content.
I am not saying that you cannot complain, i am saying that lets be fair to them and wait for the next firmware update without getting emo. If you stretch from TV, everytime you have to switch input in order to have full screen. Byond user here previously just need to set the stretch mode, then it doesn't matter they switch from SD to HD channel, they always get the full screen display on their HDTV instead of have to switch input everytime. User here only requested to re-instate back the stretch function on top of zoom and pillarbox option.
It shouldn't be too difficult unless they engineers at Astro are less than capable! Remember, Astro need to serve their customers in order for the customers feel worth the $$ they're paying for. This post has been edited by willkso: Mar 15 2010, 05:04 AM. After using pillarbox for 2 days.
I am starting to begin to accept it. HOWEVER there still are concerns.
Celestial Movies for one show almost all their shows in a letterbox format. This gives my tv a double border like look when it adds to pillar box. You can try this on animal planet as well. It reduces my screen to such a small size.letterbox plus pillar box. What the hell man?
I get a plastic border (the tv shell) and also an on screen border and the show is freakishly small. Edit: And before any smart alec's start telling me to go zoom on such channels. I did that already and when i do. The subtitles get knocked off the screen (because they are in the letter box border.

More like surviving. Chinese movie package is a good 20 bucks more or less. Pillar/box and zoom option have rendered it useless. While i am beginning to be ok with using pillar box for some channels. Its not a full blown solution for all channels.
IT LOOKS REALLY REALLY BAD on celestial movies and animal planet. Not to fully flame astro. (i think i did that already on the phone).
I will probably maintain my pillar box settings in future even if the stretch is restored, & use stretch only on the channels i'm complaining on. The problem is, pillar box is supposed to be the real way to watch SD.
Astro must be feeling terrible because a lot misguided people subscribe to B.yond. Astro already said want us to watch in real aspect 16:9. Not other weird aspect. Can't we respect their decision? They are actually educating Malaysia regarding aspect ratio of 16:9 and we should not watch in other aspect ratio than 16:9. Added on March 15, 2010, 10:31 pmand 4:3 source must be watched in 4:3 aspect ratio.

Sin No 1: Advertisements and commercials We have been sold and told that there would not be any kind of TV commercials since we are paying for the programmes we are watching. Since the launching of Astro, you will notice that more and more TV commercials have been put into our living rooms. Start counting them and your blood will boil. Is this how a cable TV is supposed to be run?
Sin No 2: Astro-on-demand re-runs We are paying additional rates for this so called 'Watch when you like, how many times you like' programme named 'Astro-on-demand'. Fine, we get to watch first-hand episodes of Hong Kong dramas and serials. But then again, you will also notice that these same dramas and serials will be aired again over 'Wah Lai Toi' some months later. And mind you, we are also paying for this 'Wah Lai Toi' package. Think, subscribers, think.
We have been milked high and dry. Sin No 3: 'Services currently not available'! I am sure this is the dreaded punch-line all subscribers hate to see when their favorite programmes are interrupted due to 'bad weather'.
This has been Astro's problem from the start and we don't see any effort being done to overcome or improve it. But then, they can say that there are always repeats and re-runs when services are resumed. Fine, then what about the 'live telecasts' that we missed? Finals like the 'All England' where a Malaysian is playing and capable of winning after seven years? Live football matches where we are being made to pay more? Not to mention the coming World Cup where we are staying up to watch?
Imagine the frustration of staying up late with some hot coffee, sitting on your couch complete with wonderful excuses for going to work late tomorrow wanting to watch your favorite teams play 'live' and all you can see is 'Services currently not available'. Just wonder whether we, as subscribers can just write in to Astro when our bills arrive and tell them 'Payment currently not available'?
Sin No 4: Programme re-runs and re-re-runs Sure, we all know how these cable TV providers operate. I am sure we can stomach some re-runs. Have you ever experienced switching on your Astro and have the feeling that you have watched this programme before?
But the real 'miracle' is that this same thing will happen to you again and again with the same programme. Then it will dawn on you that this is the same programme that they have repeated over and over again.
Switch on channels like HBO, Star Movies, etc and you will know what I mean. Sin No 5: Wanton price hike I am sure this needs no elaboration from me. We have been put through this over the years.
Sin No 6: Programme cancellation fees Ever notice how you are being pampered when you want to add new channels? Notice how efficient they are when you can have your new programmes channeled into your living rooms within half-an-hour with absolutely no connecting fees? Of course, when you want to cancel these same programmes, you will be at their mercy. A cancellation fee will be imposed.
So they are telling us that getting in is simple and free but getting out will cost you. Wake up subscribers, if this is not daylight piracy, then Somalia must be a tourist heaven. Sin No 7: Unfair programme package Ever notice how packages are being grouped? We, as subscribers, are not given a free hand to choose which programme we like to see. We are being shoved programmes we don't like just because we choose certain channels and other channels are being 'thrown' in.
Posted on Facebook Recently, Astro performed a software update download to deliver a consistent viewing experience for different aspect ratios. This is designed in conjunction with Astro’s software partners and is in accordance with international broadcast and content standards. For High-Definition content, the new software displays the image in its wide-screen format; for standard definition content, the image displays in pillar box mode (with two black bars at the sides) to retain its original proportion and resolution for optimum picture quality. Following customers' feedback after the software update download, we hear your preference and are working with our software partners to provide feasible viewing options. By the end of this week, we will replace the “Zoom” option with the “Fit to Screen” option for our customers who prefer to view Standard Definition content in full screen. To do this, customers can press the aspect ratio button on their Astro B.yond remote control.
However, for the correct proportions and best resolution, Astro recommends that Standard Definition content be viewed via the pillar box mode. Astro regrets any inconvenience caused as it strives to improve its customer experience. Astro thanks its loyal customers for their continued feedback. Only 5hd channels, memang laa tak ready even rtm pun sampai ke sudah tak broadcast hd.
Last time a friend told me he finished their installation 5 years ago. As i was typing this, Astro customer support called me regarding my report to MCMC. I used MCMC online reporting page, typed the complaint last night. They managed to resolve my dispute within the day. NEW RECORD, SYABAS MCMC. So guys, any problems with broadcast, broadband, cellular, just go to MCMC if provider's customer service can't seem to resolve it.

Regarding new HD channels, I don't think the World Cup can be considered channels Yes I know the World Cup has 5 channels set But it is merely because some matches will take place at the same time Astro will show all 64 matches LIVE so thats the reason for extra channels I also think the total might be more or less than 5 The last World Cup had 8 channels.they had different camera angles of the matches on the 8 channels.
I also remember a channel for chat and news So what I'm trying to say is the World Cup channels will be temporary only So I dont think Astro consider that as a channel I do believe new HD channels will be made available this year. Maybe up to 10 channels like Astro said But everyone must remember.someone said here that SKY in the Uk have had HD for 4 years now. But they still only have 32 HD channels N in Asia someone said only 8 or 9 HD channels only available I know RAMChYLD said a CS staff said no more new channels this year. Don take the words of the staff for granted. They are just on the Customer Service department Even TallJustin who works on the tech team at Astro doesnt know anything about new channels until it is launched Basically the people who know about new channels will be the people at the programming department Imagine if the whole of Astro staff know about new channels N say one of them let the secret out in the public Imagine how people will call Astro non stop asking when is launch, what channel is new and so on.
It will spread rumours and be chaotic to handle So lets just wait and have an element of surprise when we get the new info on HD channels. Anyways, there is no guarantee that the new HD channels will be available in ur subscription Imagine a new HD channel for Dynasty package or Metro package or Variety package I dont have the package so i wont get So even if u are demanding it now and astro does launch new HD channel, tough luck u might not even get it. So lets just wait and see k. Added on March 18, 2010, 3:26 amStretch mode is back.
That will make a lot of 1MALAYSIA happy.! This post has been edited by dxjb: Mar 18 2010, 03:26 AM. Open-captioning Similar to subtitling, open captions are always visible; they are 'burned' onto the videotape and no decoder or a built-in TV decoder chip is needed to view them.
They are usually white letters with a black rim or drop shadow. A wide variety of fonts is available for open-captioning, allowing the use of upper- and lower-case letters with descenders that drop below the baseline. The options for caption placement are great, permitting location anywhere on the screen. Closed-captioning Closed captions are not normally visible; a decoder or television with a decoder chip is necessary to view them. They are generally white capital letters encased in a black box.
However, newer technology will soon allow color text and color background, as well as latitude in the type of fonts that can be used and where captions can appear. Hope thats clear.
